Farm Neighbors
Germantown, NY
Seven neighbors, most, recently planted, and one old timer, decided to
come together and share their knowledge, energy and innocence to restore
the agricultural tradition to an area that was threatening to go suburban.
They have 450 acres between them, 32 in well tended orchards, and one seasoned
orchardist, Bob Rider who is still farming at the age to 82.
Chuck Abrams has turned his retired years to running
the marketing of their products, and he, in turn, brought in Valley Farmers
to help with their livestock. In just one year Farm Neighbors has started
a serious pastured chicken business while member Joe Palumbo is raising
300 layers and collecting 100 dozen of eggs a week. Chuck expects to
have at 50 chickens a week for sale June to October to Valley Farmers
customers. Look for them at the farmers makets – Bronxville, Millbrook
and Arlington and Ossining.
Chuck is raising pigs for Valley Farmers.
The pigs are in large pens, live outside all summer, and get plenty of
room to forage. They are fed organic feed and a supply of fruit from
the orchards. Pigs love apples.
Farm Neighbors eggs, chickens, fruit – apples, pears, peaches,
gooseberries and currants and other products made or grown by the Neighbors
are available at Old Saw Mill Farm at 140 Old Saw Mill Road, Germantown
during the harvest season. Visitors welcome, but call first. 518 537-5404. |
